From the diverse and eclectic styles of his guitar instrumentals to the hard rocking guitar sounds of The Bishop Welles Band, Rod Welles is a multi-faceted guitarist.
Incorporating slide guitar with an instantly recognizable and unique lead style, Rod is also a gifted songwriter, soloist and teacher with more than four decades of experience.
“I’ve been a musician my whole life,” explains Welles. “Electric guitar is one of my greatest joys in the world.”
Sharing that joy with others, Rod as performed with many talented and well known artists such as; Buck Cherry, Blues Traveler, Dave Brubeck, Billy Squier, Cheap Trick, Gov’t Mule, The Doobie Brothers, Roomful of Blues, Savoy Brown, Lonnie Brooks and John Lee Hooker Jr, to name just a few.
“But it’s not about the famous folks, it’s about the music,” says Welles. “That’s why I still do it. The electric guitar has saved my life more than once….It’s a true friend.”
Hailing from Boston, MA, Rod’s musical journey spans more than 45 years. During that time Rod has been signed to ten different record labels, worked with many artists and recorded numerous tunes for radio and TV ads.
With live performances numbering into the thousand across the country, Rod has played on over 100 recordings thanks, in part, to his signature lead and slide guitar styles. Rod’s solo instrumental CD Get the Red Out, was voted one of the top five local Boston CD releases in 2000.
Rod has played with many acts throughout his career including; John Butcher Axis, The Fools, Free, Tommy Bolin, The Outlaws, The Monkees, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Mighty Sam McClain, The Stompers, Face to Face, The Del Fuego’s, David Walker and Sons of Champlin.
